Ushuaia

Ushuaia

Formerly used as a penal colony because of its isolated location, Ushuaia’s remote beauty is now what makes it a major tourist destination. Regarded as the world’s southernmost city, Ushuaia is located on the Beagle Channel, serving as a popular base for Antarctica cruises, winter sports and wildlife viewing.
Complete with museums, art centers, restaurants, casinos and hotels, Ushuaia is a thriving city that many tourists use as a base to explore nearby natural attractions. Many cruises depart from Ushuai to Antarctica where tourists can see spectacular mountains, glaciers, giant ice bergs, whales and seals. Excursions from the city to Tierra del Fuego National Park provide bird watching, kayaking on the beautiful lakes and a ride on the world’s southernmost railway, the End of the World Train. A visit to the Beagle Channel offers views of sea lions and penguins. The nearby mountains of Glacier Martial and Cerro Castor provide hiking in the summer and snow sports in the winter.
Fresh seafood is abundant in Ushuaia. Mussels, pollacks and scallops are popular as well as centolla, a crustacean often served with cheese sauces and spinach, or with rice in sushi rolls. There are several restaurants also serving Argentine food as well as pizza places and coffee shops.
There may not be a wide selection of nightlife venues here, but tourists will find a few nice bars to enjoy drinks, music, dancing and socializing.
Public buses and taxis transport visitors around Ushuaia while nearby attractions are accessed by tour buses and cruises.
