Los Glaciares

Los Glaciares

Known in Spanish as Los Glaciares, the Glaciers National Park is home to some of the world’s most awe-inspiring natural wonders. Located in the Santa Cruz Province of the vast Patagonia region, the national park features the largest ice cap outside of Greenland and Antarctica.
Glaciers National Park is an alpine area of incredible beauty with glacial lakes, majestic mountains and marvelous glaciers, which are among the few in the world that can be viewed in action. The repeated advancing and retreating cycle of these glaciers presents a never ending show of cracking ice and thunderous booms as giant blocks break away and crash into the lakes with enormous splashes. Numerous boardwalks and boat rides allow visitors to view these spectacular displays in addition to floating ice bergs of remarkable colors and shapes. Perito Moreno is the most famous of these glaciers, stretching more than 3 miles (5 km) and towering 180 feet (55 meters) over the water.
While the glaciers are located in the southern section of the park, the northern section features majestic mountains such as Mount Fitz Roy, offering hiking, mountain climbing and wildlife viewing. There are also several archaeological sites of the Tehuelches Indians who once inhabited the area.
Glaciers National Park is accessed by the town of El Chalten to the north and El Calafate to the south. These towns offer restaurants, lodging, buses and tour operations to assist visitors with exploring the national park.
